ACTING IS MY SECOND TALENT- ASHLEY NWOSU

Versatile actor and a pioneer artiste of Nollywood, Ashley Nwosu has another side of him, which you are most likely yet to know.

At the recent launch of Ogologolonga, a musical album by gospel musician, Ayo Agbaje, the actor stunned many of his fans when he vacated his table to join the singer and his cultural dancers on stage. Nwosu, who was obviously carried away by the song could not restrain himself from singing.

“Yes I have a very big passion for music,” an excited Nwosu told media men shortly after his brief performance. He explained further, “I would say acting was a second talent because when I was 10 years old, I used to entertain people in my community through music. I used to do exactly what Ekom Obong Okere, the Nigerian native Xylophone prodigy does to people in Cross River. Throughout my youthful days, I was always composing songs and I often received inspiration in my dreams all of which I used to remember clearly the next day. Unfortunately, I lost my song book, an exercise book which contained over 200 songs during the Biafran war”.

The actor cum singer, whose favourite artiste is Barry White, grew up listening to foreign music such as Isaac Newton, Kool and the Gang, Kenny Rogers, Don Williams among others. While at the home front the likes of Victor Uwaifo, Nduka Osadebe, Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey and Sonny Okosun are his favourite in spite of the growing pop culture among young musicians of today

Though presently Ashley is fully into acting and recognised as one of the Nollywood Stars, he still nurses the ambition to go into music, but when he eventually does it would be strictly Christian music. He further explains “Although, I have always been a Christian, the level, which I have gone now is higher . I can’t explain this, but one way or the other, the impression continues to dawn on me that I have to join the choir and showcase what I can do. Occasionally on my own, I sing fantastic songs but I don’t know why I have not recorded them. I sing for myself, and I enjoy doing this quite a lot and the inspiration just keeps coming”.

On his absence from movies he says it is as a result of the conflict between censors board and marketers, adding that he discovered most of the movies he shot were taken outside the country before they were returned back to Nigeria. He further expresses hope that with the new censors board arrangement , the ugly trend would be stopped as there is a need for co-operation from both parties.

On the era of movie premieres, he describes it as a positive development for the movie industry because It will give investors such as corporate bodies and government the guarantee that through premiership alone, good profit can be recouped. He also hinted plans to have a Hausa translation for his movie and get a northern government to partner with him.

He further added that with this trend, Nollywood will become an investor’s delight. The standard of production will also be raised and movies will become globally accepted when there is enough funds.

The versatile actor also has plans to establish an NGO which he wants to premiere in Lagos and Abia. “I have started talking to Dansa Juice and Abia state government for the premiere in Abia State. All these efforts will culminate in the setting up of an NGO with the Abia State government, which I propose to call MyThird Eye. I have noticed that a lot of government functionaries do work but because of lack of monitoring units, they have a problem that is why I call it My Third Eye. I will then give them feedback because most of the people in the ministry might not have time to report the correct state of affairs. I hope to achieve this before the end of this year”.

Ashley Nwosu started professional acting with NTA in 1988/1989, and he’s among the people who started Soap operas and Tele movies in Nigeria. He also acted in the movie, Glamour Girls (Part 1) in 1992, after that he ventured into other businesses but the urge for acting was strong. So he returned to his passion acting.

Why are some people so strongly opposed to the content of rap and hip hop music?

I am speaking about the slang terms like b!tch and h0e.
I am speaking about the drug references.
I am speaking about the references to gang-type violence.

The last time I checked, rap and hip hop were styles of music, meaning a form of entertainment -not a source of education.

Why must music artists (mainly blacks in this case) produce music in a manner to represent ethinic or racial groups in a positive sense? Why are they given this responsibility? Music is supposed to be about entertainment -not about being role models and setting examples for children.

People say what they want in their music because it is an artistic expression of life. It is not meant to be a learning tool for kids. Nor is it meant to act as a representative of a certain racial or ethnic group of people.

In a country where people are free to say what they want, people are also free to not hear what they do not want. This means don't listen if you do not like it.

Why the urge to censor art?

I think its funny how people blame music that talks about problems that were around long before the music was.

If anything, and for lack of any other way to put this any clearer without putting it on television where it might actually sink in:

RAP MUSIC THAT TALKS ABOUT VIOLENCE AND DRUG USE AND GANGS IS A RESULT OF VIOLENCE, DRUG USE, AND GANGS.

The chicken came first in this case... not the egg.

edit: Mona Lisa wasn't born AFTER the painting was painted, was she?

edit #2: perhaps people don't understand the concept of art being a mirror to society-

BAD THINGS = PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT BAD THINGS

not vice versa...

any more dummies on the thumbs button?... anyone?
