High Ed Hardy tattoo art and his business
By: Ed Hardy Clothes
40 years ago, Don Ed Hardy flew a Yale fine art scholarship to pursue the art of tattooing rogue, an eternal taboo regularly convention that captivated him as a boy in the seaside city in Orange County Corona del Mar. At ten he was drawing cars and eagles on the back of children and arms with crayons and wet eyeliner Maybelline.
In the San Francisco Art Institute in the early '60s, Hardy mastered the demanding art of intaglio engraving, under the tutelage of the late Gordon Cook, a no-jive blue-collar type Hardy instill a love of crafts, Asian art and the quiet strength of little images Giorgio Morandi Still life. Cook was not pleased when his protege endowed jumped into the murky waters of social tattoo. But everything went well for the brave Child Hardy, the fuzzy boundary between'high supposed and'low''''arte and carving a path through the world of art and commerce. Photographs has been developed torsos, canvases and giant moves with the same conviction and freshness.
A pioneer of the tattoo and the historian who extended the range of colors and pictorial possibilities custom-made body art, Hardy, who will speak about their work reaching a free slide show lecture at Mills College on Wed, is also a fertile lithographer, painter and engraver. His paintings burning of demons, dragons, women with sideburns and Buddhas - informed by old master prints, japanese'hell Century 12'', scrolls and woodblock prints from the 19th century, Southern California, striping hot rod and funk and humor of the Bay of art Space - are widely distributed and collected. And for the last year or so, his first photographs of tattoos, skulls the'retro'' Derby girls and sailor-style beat them now, have appeared on T-shirts, jackets, motorcycles and even energy drinks sold worldwide under the brand Ed Hardy.
There are now Ed Hardy stores in New York, Los Angeles, Tucson and Dubai. That $ 20 million a year business, which manages Hardy a small portion for the authorization of his name and his art is the effort of the French-born marketing ace Christian Audigier, who pushed the Von Dutch brand and now everyone from Madonna to Larry King wrapped in Hardy. It is a pleasant turn of events for an artist who made his bones tattoos daggered hearts and anchorages for sailors in San Diego in the days of old before the dissolute body art became respectable. Now it almost seems that there is a Starbucks and a tattoo parlor on every corner.
"Why do people get tattoos? Not sure. I think it's completely primal urge,''says Hardy, 61. He is the subject of many lost had put in his body since he got his first tattoo, a rose on his left shoulder in Frisco Bob's in Oakland four decades gone. "It's one of those mysterious things. Based entirely on evidence, frozen mummies, the oldest members of our species had tattoos. I think that predates cave painting.''
An obsessive picturemaker since the age of three years, Hardy now divides his time between San Francisco, where his tattoo shop in the town of North Beach is strong, and Honolulu, where he paints and makes prints. He also spends time in Japan, where their pictures are painted by hand in the factory to produce porcelain and articles paper and which will create a giant dragon - king of Asia's legendary creatures - on the roof of an old Buddhist church in Kyoto.
'I got it all goin''', announces Hardy, a modest man, frank and funny, which in 1973 became the first Westerner to study tattooed with a Japanese master traditional, Horihide unusual in the city of Gifu, where Hardy punched and painted the skin of several of the Japanese gangsters known as yakuza. Dressed in a green plaid shirt, khaki pants and a pair of slippers cordless spearmint with the signature Ed Hardy and his views on the 1940 Tex Avery's wolf drooling, Hardy recalled his colorful history in the city yesterday Tattoo.
He helped transform the medium, the creation of elaborate design and custom color tattoos that often took weeks. Tattooists inspired youth of Australia to Europe, many of whom came to San Francisco to get Hardy on your skin.
"That freed me up,''says Hardy," because most of my art had been either recorded or demanding type tattoo - very tight, things. I was always curious about a freer kind of painting.''Recommended young artists to free themselves from from'some race program, and not art that really means something to you personally.''

Does anyone know of a tattoo artist who works from home femal?
should be in Perth Western Australia
I would not like me a tattoo of someone who works outside the home. First, it would be impossible for a tattooist house to sustain the kind of conditions required under the law santitary and maintained by a reputable tattoo shop. The needles should be disposable, autoclaved other teams (the same as dental or medical equipment), ink must be dispensed in disposable cups and not the common good. Using unsterilized put the receiver in the risk of a series of blood-borne diseases such as hepititis, staphylococcal infections, etc. .. If cost is a problem, looks like this ... you are asking someone to make a deep abrasion and inkjet low skin. Something that if not done right, it is not easy or cheap fixed. Is not it worth a few extra dollars to spend on what you are sure that the artist has the training adequate and keeps his team in a santitary?
