The Bodhran: The Unofficial Drum of Ireland
Recently I was listening to the soundtrack to River Dance. I think the lack of lyrics in music makes it useful to listen to while writing. I listened to music dozens of times, but for some reason, I was struck by something new this time, namely: the prevalence and importance of drums in music. Maybe I never picked him before, because the sound of all clogs creates an overwhelming impression of percussion. However, if it were not for the drums and their undeniable rhythm, none of the Irish dancers would be able to find a rhythm. So I wonder, exactly how much of a tradition of making drums in Ireland?
When it comes to Irish drums, bodhran, rather has a corner on the market. Interestingly, the history of this instrument is relatively short, at least as compared with the battery in some other world regions. The final register first use the bodhran was only about four years, in 1603, when it was used by the Irish in their rebellion against the English. Like the Japanese taiko drums, bodhran was used as an instrument war, allowing pipers and warriors alike to maintain a proper marching cadence. It must have been effective, because for the next four centuries, this instrument is property of the war and whistles. It was used as a musical instrument to modern times.
In the 1960s, there was a resurgence of popularity Irish traditional music. This trend is largely due to the influence of Seán Ó Riada, composer and bandleader whose compositions did much Irish for the international reputation of Irish music. The use of the Iliad bodhran in his music had the effect of the drum set as a legitimate instrument. Since then, This drum has gained a reasonable amount of popularity in Scotland and northern Europe, although still common in his own land in Ireland.
A bodhran is a frame drum, ie a drum whose diameter is greater than its depth. It can range in diameter from 10 to 26 inches, although most measure 14 to 18 inches in diameter. The depth can be anywhere from 3.5 to 8 inches. The instrument is open on one side and has a drumhead on the other, which is traditionally made from skin of a goat. However, as with so many modern versions of traditional drums, patches of Bodhrans 21st century are often of synthetic materials. Because aside the drum is open, an artist can place his hand against the inside of the drum, which allows control of pitch and timbre of the instrument.
Normally Bodhrans play in a sitting position. The artist has the drum vertically against the thigh and supports the upper body and hand. Moreover, as mentioned, is placed inside drum to allow tension control. These batteries can be played with bare hands, but a traditional stick can also be used. The names of this leg include "bone", "dump", "beater" and "cipin. Some artists also use brushes, but this is a very recent occurrence. There are a variety of accepted playing styles, and it's still relatively "new" instrument, these are constantly evolution.
