Changes in the New York gallery scene

After seven years in the booming art market, New York, traders and artists are settling down to focus. With a combination of gallery closures and change the size of the gallery, the change is coming and to expect the best in the long term.

The most notable change is the decline in the world of the gallery. More popular than a handful of galleries in New York closed on the basis of recent months, including And Cohan & Leslie Guild and Greyshkul. Artists, Kiel Anya, Sara Vanderbeek, and Johannes Vanderbeek founded one of the most vibrant galleries in the NY scene and Greyshkul Guild. The gallery held its Last Hurrah on 5 February with the opening of a three-day exhibition called, The From Here. The sample presented more than one hundred artists, many of those who have demonstrated or were represented by the gallery. It was an impressive spectacle, with lots of great works, including painting, sculpture, video and performance.

The exhibition at the end marked a change in the way galleries can be present in the future. As a guild Greyshkul and artist-run space, time homeowners stretched between the operation of the gallery and the creation of their own work. This is an equilibrium difficult and often leading the artists to move to focus on their own work or the artist discovered that are more suitable for the operation of a gallery of making art. In the case of Guild Greyshkul owners and chose to focus on their work, leaving many artists without representation.

Another gallery, recently noted a change in the gallery scene is Zach Feuer Gallery. Feuer has recently decided to reduce the number of artists represented, leaving eight artists go. Artists such as Tal R, Christoph Ruckhaberle Danica Phelps and will no longer be represented by Feuer. This means that the gallery are particularly less painters. Feuer said that this decision was driven by the desire to redirect their time to focus more on the artists, rather than sales.

If these changes in the signal better, smaller gallery system has not yet been seen. My instinct tells me that a more traditional galleries will reappear, so that the distributor closer to the artist, but with clearly defined functions.

Name of New York based artist who paints portraits on repetitive found objects?

I'm trying to remember the name of a New York City based on "outsider" artist who paints the same profile portrait of a man naive male, smoking, in all kinds of found objects. I have seen everything from album covers, to trays, the stereo speakers. The face is always the same rendered, simple strong black lines, and has a quality almost tom finland to it. If I remember correctly, the artist is a collector of antique shops and sacrifices as objects of their shops for their customers.
