Paradise Island Mystery and Anton Chekhov

Paradise Island Mystery and Anton Chekhov

title = "Email">

Â

By Wendell W. Solomons Â

Literary scholars Russia arrived in Sri Lanka at a symposium on the writers Chekhov and Bunin.

After the visit to 1890 July, Chekhov, in letters to his friends describe the Russian island of Sakhalin as â € ~ hella € ™ and â € ~ called Ceylon paradise.â € ™

During the March visit 2006, Russian experts are wondering why Anton Chekhov wrote a detailed book to describe Sakhalin, an island penal colony, while he did not publish at most a short essay on the island he had called â € ~ Paradisea € ™. The bigger the world has appointed a historic pilgrimage site Island - Adama € ™ s Peak.

Chekhova € ™ s compatriot Sergio Bunin had visited and written about Ceylon. Bunin had become the first Russian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The experts had arrived for the March symposium in Moscow ice wearing a suit and tie. You can feel what the tropical sun did to them in Colombo. The local team, From Sri Lanka, scholars who come at the Russian Cultural Center at the symposium, wearing light clothing cotton blend.

However, there was the tropical sun that only the Russian team had to overcome. A mystery of Anton Chekhov pursued them to the symposium.

He wondered - why Chekhov is not shared impressions of Ceylon with its large number of readers?

Although Chekhov's fame today is mainly based on his works, he wrote hundreds of short stories, even if I had to also lay the of their teenage years. As noted in the Chekhov's symposium who had traveled to Kandy in the central highlands, where he met a Russian-speaking Buddhist monk € ™ s Russian Buryatia. This monk sought information about a native woman healer then Chekhov traveled to find a cure for a disease Chekov € ™ s.

We know Chekhov was impressed with the lady and gave her a necklace. On leaving the island, including Chekhov is bringing with him a couple of mongooses were little and a palm Civet € | However, why is not shared with its huge audience, a story of his findings in Ceylon?

At the symposium, a group member Sri Lanka sought to place the Russian guests at ease.

He suggested: Perhaps great interest Chekhova € ™ s was to become familiar with the Buddhism?

When it sensed an almost â € ~ Ah! Â € ™ through the participants' thinking, here was relief at last!

I floated in Buddhism thoughts of Helen P. Blavatsky. His visit with Henry Steel Olcott had preceded Chekhov to Ceylon. Olcott had been leading a campaign to important for the establishment of more schools in the island. Sitting beside me was a woman journalist in Moscow, and I reminded him Yelena Blavatskayaâ € |

She said: "It looks more like Blavatskaya it currently has."

He then referred to the vivid now faces at the symposium, "Look natural smile. They sand t ™ € stages of American advertising industry. "

The house experts were happy that the guests were comfortable. I have read the smiles as two groups that had broken the ice and received affirmation of shared interests.

An evening cocktail was scheduled to follow. However, after falling in some snacks. I was deeply in concern: "Was the mystery solved? If the Buddhist Chekhov interested? "

Now to Research

Russian experts recalled that after Shakespeare, Chekhov has become the worldâ ™ € s most popular playwright coming. He also told the audience that the only reminder of Chekhov knew it was of the former Soviet Union is at the Grand Hotel Oriental - or Government of Honduras - in Colombo.

I could go to the Grand Oriental Hotel for clues. The location, which had been bought by a state bank in the 1950s was quite familiar. At the bank, my father was elected to oversee the reconstruction hotel and like a child who had visited him at work. A hotel isnâ € ™ t a museum, but my fatherâ € ™ s generation, as before, had held a memorial at the â € ~ Chekhov suite. € ™

In the alcove leading to the room are framed pictures Chekhov. Within more pictures of the room, sitting with Tolstoy and Chekov then with Gorky.

The illustrations and the room took me in time. I remembered the feelings again involved and the nature of the people who had preserved the memory of the writer.

Speaking of feelings involved â € "was Chekhov study Buddhism as a result of the debate about the origins of biological life caused by the publication of Darwin's 19th century € ™ s Theory Evolution? Chekhov was in search of an anchor before or stronger ethics for society as in the case of Blavatskaya and Olcott?

Â

Â

Historically speaking, the ethics of philosophies such as Buddhism was introduced in 600 BC, ie before Christianity. Earlier philosophies are increasing the illustration in the Bible and this quote briefly describes a problem absorbing page after page of Ecclesiastes:

The wise man has eyes in his head, while the fool walks in darkness, but I realized that the same fate reaches both.
Then I thought of my heart, "The dumb luck also reach me. So I gain by being wise? "I said in my heart," This too is meaningless. "(Ecclesiastes 2:13 / 14)

Make Buddhism and Christianity against the issue of â € ~ Meaningless € ™ in human life?

Chekhov raised in a religious family who sang old Slavonic liturgy centered home and read the Bible. Founding philosophy was not lost. To answer the question in its history â € ~ Ward No: 6a € ™. Chekhov's hero exclaims in the Greek Stoics whose ethics of separation reached its zenith aa, not much after the arrival of Buddhism â € "

"What was I saying? Oh, yes! This is what I mean: one of the Stoics was sold into slavery to redeem his neighbor, so you see, even a stoic reaction to stimulus € | "
We know that among the forms of stimulation, â € ™ € ~ compassion takes precedence in Gautama Buddhaâ € ™ s teachings. Four Noble in the tents of existence is first reserved for the â € ~ Karunaâ € ™ (â € ~ Pali language compassion € ™.) Last but not least we witness that Gautama Buddhaâ € ™ s personal life offers us the example of his practice of caring for people and life.

Audience and Chekhova € ™ s Message
With regard to â € ~ compassion € ™ in Chekhov, outlined his choice of form and the depth of his own work in a letter to his brother Alexander:

1

Absence of long verbiage of a political-social-economic;
2
Total objectivity;
3
Accurate descriptions of people and objects;
4
Extreme
brevity;
5
The boldness and originality flee the stereotype;
6
Compassion.

Chekhov did not intend that their work is limited to a sectarian subculture alone. From what he writes in paragraph 1 above which may wish he had chosen to write for large audiences. To make your job keeping out mutant â € ~ fashions and ideologies of day.â ™ €
The original sentence is one of 1998 and comes from the West banker named James Wolfensohn.

Spport win - as Kurt Waldheim - James Wolfensohn had risen to the top of the Washington-based World Bank in the 1990s. As Waldheim in the Secretariat of the UN-General € ™ s post, his bio-data later exposed him as a Nazi officer.

Wolfensohn has been moved to Washington development bank DC for the leadership position of the J Schrader ¶ der Bank in New York and the same cunning and queer commercial bank's board of directors Allen Dulles had been elevated to the head CIA. The Schrader J ¶ der Bank represented Gremanyâ € ™ s IH Stein Bank that in turn was led by the relationship of a Schrader ¶ der. To complete the circle, Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler among the faithful of age belonged to the clan IH Stein Bank and issued checks drawn on personal accounts in Cologne.

Â

The words were spoken Wolfensohn to World Bank directors after 1998 the final collapse of the Russian ruble at the hands of reformists within the â € ~ monetarist € ™ label had been sent to Moscow in 1993.

Â

According to testimony before Congress putting U.S. by Professor Janine Wedel, and according to research by Anne Williamson (both available on the WWW), the fashion group was prepared by Wolfenson monetarist € ™ s direct-attached, who also holds the banka ™ € s second power of the Chief Economist.

After Wolfensohn, the leader of the monetarist comment Milton Friedman began closing his book, but the mutant virus, a negative nihilism, go crazy creating the antipathy of the community and social dissolution.

Chekhov, in response to nihilism
In Chekhova € ™ s time, a strain of Russia had become a professional nihilism ™ € s shelter a multitude of social and political movements such as the anarchists, Decembrists and populist who preached a retreat of the monarchy.

Tsar Alexander II was responding to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln € ™ s call when faced with a violent separation of the southern slave states U.S.. Alexander II sent a fleet of Russian warships to New York and California in Lincoln € ™ s order. At home, reform-oriented Alexander II abolished serfdom in 1861 and corporal punishment. He established the local autonomy, initiated judicial reform, reviewed the educational system and better management police.

Â

Â

Dissolution of social ethics
If the social good is deconstructed or hidden a myth or a fad, then a finger may seem to exist without the body of humanity. In this ideology happy, "me" society survive if it freezes to death.

Monetarists like Milton Friedman closely associated with Alice Rosenbaum. Born in St. Petersburg in 1906, Rosenbaum was eventually established in the U.S. to begin the presentations on social philosophy at the 1930th € ™ s under the name of â € ~ Ayn Rand.â € ™ She borrowed the nihilism and then took her to the brink precipice of Thomas Hobbes of the 1650A € ™ s.

Â

Â

As a rash of fraud that affected marauders U.S. companies, famous New York financier George Soros described the situation as "counterproductive." Two can play the same game.

Â

Â

Rizal admired Colomboâ € ™ s beautiful buildings, barracks, temples, streets with trees, botanical garden and museum. After visiting a hospital that the doctor wrote: â € ~ n smell of the disease, not dirt, anything that reminds one of the diseases ... â € ™

Â

Â

Â

Â

Â

Chekhov is therefore suitable for Sri Lanka and Russia, where the population has returned and incorporate the social good. Populations have to get rid of changing the shape of a pre-civic pre-agrarian and pre-industrial cult of selfishness.
Looking more in our wounded world, billions of people can be inspired by the works of great personalities as Anton Chekhov.

Today, video and television are available. Sri Lankan-born Michael Ondaatjeâ € ™ s book became the movie "The English Patient". Shone for Oscars and winner of more awards than € ~ â € ™ Evita.â U.S. President passed into history with a comment that Ondaatje preferred.

Â

A final budget is from Chekhov's "The Artist € ™ s Story" (1896):

"My life is boring, boring, monotonous, because I am a painter, a rare type, and is greatly concerned by envy, discontent, lack of faith in my work my life: I am always poor, I am a bum, but you are a normal rich man, a landowner, a gentleman - Why live so tamely and take so little of life? "
Â
Chronology
I had to develop a chronology of events in this attempt to solve the mystery.
Born on 29 January 1860, Chekhov had contracted tuberculosis. From the age of 24 when he suffered his first episode of bloody sputum and lungs, pain, health is impaired. In 1889 he saw his brother Nikolai died of tuberculosis. Plus, his training as a doctor would have left no doubt that his life would not allow raise their children to maturity.

Noting that, we must come to grips with a dedication by which Chekhov had reached 30 years traveled 5,000 miles of land Sakhalin and returned by ship through Hong Kong, Singapore (which was depressing), India, Ceylon, Port Said and Odessa to Moscow. Before this trip that began in April 1890, Chekhov had observed:

"After Australia in the past, and Cayenne, Sakhalin is the only place where one can study the colonization by criminals. All Europe is interested in him and is of no use to us? Of the books I've read, it is clear we have to let millions of people languishing in prison, his destruction carelessly, without thinking, barbarously; were people in the cold chains through of the thousands of miles, infected with syphilis, depraved them, multiplied criminals and place the blame for all this red-guardians of the white-nosed prison. All civilized Europe knows that is not the guardians, who are to blame, but all of us, however, this is not our business, we are not interested. "
John Cooper scored Chekhova € ™ s Sakhalin study: From outside the prison gave an impression of cleanliness and order, but under the conditions of the blocks are very miserable. The set of half the building was occupied by a long tilted platform plank on which the prisoners slept. There was no bedding and the whole room was full rags, paper, bread, and various belongings.
"He's a beast existence is nihilistic, a denial of personal rights, privacy and comfort."

Returning to the family home Chekhov in Moscow on 1 December 1890, Chekhov immediately began to compile and organize their work in Sakhalin. Similarly Immediately, the strain of the expedition took its toll on his health and his usual benign mood. "Life in Moscow, after my work in Sakhalin seems so sad and mundane you want to scream out loud, "he wrote to his publisher Suvorin shortly after his return." Every time I get sick and tired of my friends and acquaintances in Moscow. "

Chekhov spent four years writing, finally published in 1895 as â € ~ The Island: A Journey to Sakhalin € ™ and was acclaimed both by liberals and leftists as a signal contribution to the movement for prison reform.

This writing was slow due to, among other things, Chekhova € ™ s role as a census taker and its commitment to help victims of the Russian € ™ s devastating famine of 1891. They struggle by the construction of a tuberculosis sanitarium and school for the peasants who tended during epidemics of cholera, typhoid and other fevers, treatment of thousands for free.

In 1892 Chekhov had bought and moved to a farm in the village of Melikhov, where some of his best stories as stories emerged and stories that represent intellectual alienation, egocentricity and megalomania as â € ~ Ward Number sixa € ™ (1892) and â € ~ The Black Monk, â € ™ (1894).

In 1897 Chekhova € ™ s tuberculosis began to sustain their work. They need a temperate climate, took to life whether in the Crimea or abroad.

The images often do not represent that it was a tall, handsome, attractive to women and only after age 40 made a weakened Chekov choices that could have interfered with their work, participation in marriage. In August 1900 the Moscow Art Theater actress Olga Knipper (who performed a central role in Chekhova € ™ s play) started as a joke to cajole patients playwright on marriage in his letters and Chekhov married her in May 1901.

Chekhova € ™ s â € ~ Play The Cherry Orchard € ™ came to the stage with great success in the January 17, 1904, but Chekhov died in July the same year in Badenweiler. In seeking more foreign objects, later discovered that Germany (which has become the most popular playwright made there) was in 2004, named a square in the city of Chekhov, thus adding in Badenweiler a bust erected in 1906 by friends of Russia in the city where it was Chekhov for medical treatment in 1904.

Chekhov is buried in Moscow € Novodeviche ™ s Monastery, traditional leaders and celebrities.

Buddhist Concepts
WWW online resources for Buddhist concepts are available in the Kandy Buddhist SocietyA € ™ s â € ~ Buddhist Dictionary.â € ™ For details see online, for example, the writings of Nyanaponika Thero.

Speaking shortly here, I might add that in the halls Four Noble, second, â € ~ Metthaâ € ™, teaches that one must live in peace with all beings.

The third, â € ~ Mudithaâ € ™, teaches the joy of sympathy anotherâ € ™ s performance (for example, my altruism to replace the practice of envy and greed.)

Greek Stoics taught detachment from worldly things in order to achieve peace of mind for academic work (the Cynics was more cultivate indifference beyond a joke in the world.)

However, Gautama Buddha, through the fourth Noble residence "Upekkhā" asked not be awed or overwhelmed by households joys or sorrows of the world. He does not ask households to break the world contain four Noble Dwellings A call for balance and fairness, but not indifference.

Chekhov's legacy includes more than 400 stories. Both waiting for developments in the scripts for TV and video. Chekhov's legacy also includes scores of dramas that can still be transferred more quickly to TVA € | Chekhov can not be judged in the context of advertising-driven consumerism. The study of the needs as a mobilizer of compassion and good social development. Back to incorporate social good then seemed so dangerous to me that on 28 July 1992 I sent a protest of 3,000 words of explanation (visible on the WWW), the Bank Copied to the World € ~ â € ™ News.â Moscow suggested I also cheated a Russia that could turn to the east, as happened Now, in China, for example, had begun a thorough reform policy.The label 1977 s ™ € islanda social deconstruction was "Open Economy". After one and half decades of testing, the social virus was renamed € ™ â € ~ economic reform and used by monetarists in Russia 1993.Impressed by what he saw, Rizal said: â € ~ Colombo is more beautiful, intelligent and elegant as that of Singapore, the point of Galle and Manila ... â € ™ His observations are not alone. We can take the second plate at the Grand Hotel Oriental indicating that José Rizal, a physician, scholar, patriot, martyr and hero Philippine National presented at the hotel in 1882, during one of his four visits to Sri Lanka Colombo.In, self-defeating brutality was imposed from 1977 when the World Bank and its subsidiaries social surgery began. As a result, Chekhova € ™ s paradise island can not be easily evoked.They were blind to the civic traditions evolved from the Magna Carta 1215, an agreement that limits the power of the king of England. In the hands of Rosenbaum and Milton Friedman, who had jumped to the platform U.S. Presidential Economic Adviser, nihilism began to change whole societies to a pre-civic opportunism.Hobbes wild, intoxicating, a plagiarist Italya € ™ s Machiavelli, was that â € ~ pamphleteered a war of all against Othera ™ € help the British elites dominate over ordinary people. This fashion was discarded because it would create social breakdown in Britain. However, Rosenbaum and Friedman belong in the past, groups of migrants that were alien in the 20th century the place of ethics civilisation.The nihilistic western (â € ~ the treatment of everything external to your work table to Nothing € ™) allows a doctor, for example, to care for a sick patient regardless of whether the patient broke into an anarchist, liberal, monarchist or policy in the ward.
We must distinguish that part of this coincides with Anton Chekhov. Taking the oath of Hypcrites during their training as a doctor, was seen the need to help the general population, regardless of political fraction, and labeling himself a free artist.
However, more. From of the land he knew firsthand, Russia, Chekhov became worldwide, a mobilizer of public towards the social virus did fine without his being sidelined by man, such as sectarian exclusivism or philosophical deconstruction.Yet, Alexander II was assassinated by a bomb thrown at his car. The name of a local revolutionary group, the Narodnaya Volya (â € ~ peoplee € ™ s Willa € ™) was invoked, but what could not always be assessed was the flow of money into groups politicians, including funds that came from foreign sources for subversion in Russia.Using the first state television channel of time, the promised maniacs a stable, convertible ruble. She then went on to wreak havoc. With the peso devalued more than a hundred times, family income was reduced to nothing. Mothers and parents sell their homes to find food. Without a roof, they and their children were lost in the dark. Frozen bodies had to be collected on the streets of ice on the Jews morning.Scapegoating was used to collect the Germans to Hitler. Therefore, it could decide that Wolfensohn was speaking of authority in the â € ~ fashions and ideologies of day.â ™ € media can be used to spread a myth to impoverish the population. However, the witness of the difference between (a) the Buddhist temple where the verses are sung in ancient Pali and (b) the Christian church today where hymns are sung in a local language, you can expect any similarity of values? something to pursue support. No rituals, but in deeper sense, the anchor of Buddhism can be considered to belong in Chekhova € ™ s work? That may have contributed to the rise of its popularity Chekhov already existed between Sri Lankao € ™ s Buddhist - or put another way, Chekhova € ™ s feelings long ONLYÂ no sympathy in the Christian heartland.
