Leading Artists Talent Agency
Master Quality Song Demo reels that Sizzle!
As a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency and founder of ReelMusician.com I can say that review demos can be a curse as a blessing. Despite that we accumulate on desks in the offices of A & R and music industry professional office floors as well, I can almost guarantee that the vast majority of demos 1) does not have the opportunity, 2) does not listen, at least for people and one of the main I and not through a pre-selection process using college interns, and 3) may not even be the same music, but the packaging and marketing colors, etc. used for the artist press kit that result in the denial of the artist contract. What makes for a master quality demo? What makes a demonstration of the quality of teacher who gets heard? These are the big issues and I can tell you a lot of people have all kinds of ideas and suggestions, I will consider some gut level thinking and the ideas I have mentally compiled through the years I've always felt would be an advantage, not only musically, but from a marketing perspective. Hopefully there will be some nugget of truth that can be used to pursue a career in music and song demos
As we begin to look at the quality of the teacher and demos which makes them up, what are your goals and ambitions? The reason I ask this because not only help prepare mentally and help you set goals for your career, but also helps to set the agenda for the site and what your demo should sound and look. A big difference in submitting their demo to the people of A & R and the club owner trying to win to play live. But regardless of where the presentation of the show, you have to exude professionalism and character of not only your music but on the credibility of the Act as well. That last statement is critical. If the act is perceived as credible with the ball rolling and some key elements in place, are much more likely to be 1) reviewed by the director A & R real and 2) any enthusiasm could snowball through the aisles of the Target record company that ultimately a record deal.
But back to the demo. In ReelMusician.com collect demos for songwriters and vocalists of jingles to try to break into the jingle singing market and I can say from experience it is difficult to create a teacher quality display if the song itself is not the quality of the material master demo of the song. So be honest about of any material you are recording. Is this top 10 if given the chance, or is it a filler, b side song? Yes, you can take a song just because it "audible" to a big production, but still the grounds that a fair court ob song remains a fair side b side song. One looks back through the years in the songs that got your attention and almost hypnotic, and that's before the onslaught of incredible recording gear and affordable. These songs are just songs great plain, without even the most ingenious of the recording capabilities today.
When recording, do not rely on a lot of "tricks of recording" or filling rate effects that detract from and try to keep a song just differently. Many people with more authority one can speak of effects, etc. I, but I say that less is more, and you should be concerned about the quality of the song and the production of use Any effects that are needed and the effects not only thrown away without reason or cause.
Who are the players using their demos? Obviously, if you're a band is recording her group, but if you are a solo act or a master writer of the creation of demos, then consider a couple of options. If money is not an object, then go for the whole rhythm section and keyboard pads, etc. One thing you need to know and understand is that it is better to use fewer players who are simply incredible to have the complete rhythm section with less experienced players or players who simply can not support their song. I remember years ago, when I was first starting out before our television and radio credits, for the sake of having a sound track that compromises the total production for the players, while more affordable, not as experienced and therefore my productions were not as strong until I learned this valuable lesson. Even today, I will choose to use a guitar string or a first piano player instead of a full rhythm section on the projects, if that's what the song and call production. Always get the best musicians - always worth it. These players often have the ideas and expand their production and make incredible artistic elements that would have thought - Which leads to my next point.
Keyboards are amazing and there is a wide range of sounds and pads that can be used to create all sorts of emotional tones in his music, but not trapped in the "I have a keyboard, a microphone and computer syndrome. His music will suffer. want the creativity of other players. They bring the musical magic that most of us, quite honestly, are not creative enough to capture, but with his experience and talent, are able offer not only incredible breaks, but the professionalism of your demo might not otherwise ever had. Using the best players possible whenever possible. I to say our ReelMusician.com demos sound incredible, because of our efforts in obtaining the best players - Get the best!
With a few moments to left, let's see some final important notes and ideas. Do not get discouraged after recording a song which, in turn, thought differently. You know, without sounding cliché, productions and songs do not getter with time and practice. Always look at the money spent on demos of schooling. Where to go to learn the lessons you just learned? - In a textbook, of course not. Keep at it, be honest about his writing and production. Continue learning from great writers and producers. Listen to great classical writers, and thus broaden its next pop ballad string arrangements. Do not be afraid to try new ideas. Get the best players on an inexpensive, but Studio quality, and I hope you start recording the next Top Ten!
