Many artists who are new to licensing this question. Art licensing is done primarily in the form of royalties - which means you will receive a percentage sales.

This is great when sales are high, because you stand to gain much more than they would have paid a flat fee or work for base rent. However, there is always the risk that the product is not good - for one reason or another - and you will gain little or nothing. This is simply the nature of the grant license and has to decide if it's OK with him.

In the art licensing, which share the success or failure of a product his art with the manufacturer.

This, of course, means that artists in the licensing spend much time creating art, not knowing if they will win a penny. We are not exchanging time for money, but the opportunity for creativity. This feels strange at first, to artists who are accustomed to being used in a traditional sense or billing by the project or per hour.

That does not mean having a basic understanding of what to expect in the way of royalties is not important.

When you are first starting out, you will not have much bargaining power over copyright as if you have one more company More big name recognition and consumer demand for their art. In my experience, there is little room for maneuver in the rate, and more, in other words, the inclusion of its name and Web address on products or packaging.

The Graphic Artists Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines, available in most bookstores and online, is a great resource for the entire fee of the things art related. For example, on page 138 of the 12 th edition comparative sample rates greeting card and novelty design. Gives a series of flat fee and royalties for calendars, gift wrap, greeting cards, mugs and more ... There are many such tables in the book. Is a useful resource I think every artist should have in your collection.

rates vary copyright by industry and by distribution channel - that is, what type of store products are sold in. So if you have a manufacturer that specializes in stocks higher end boutique - you should expect a fee higher than a company selling at Target. The amount of product sold will vary greatly by what has to be compensated differently.
