Ms. Glasser designed a stained glass window for her art studio. She made the window in the shape of a swuare, 6 ft by 6 ft. Each side of the big square was bisected and the midpoints were connected to make another square. This process was repeated several times to create the effect of nested squares. The four triangles at the corners of each square were made with the same color of glass, but each square had its own color. The colors from outside to the inside are in this order. Red, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, black and white.
One day a fly was buzzing around the room and occasionally landed on the window. Ms. Glasser observed the fly and thought the flight pattern was random. She wondered what the probability was that the fly would land in the different colors of the windows.

Ok, the first color is going to consist of 4 triangles, with base and height 3 (because she started with a 6 ft side and then bisected it).

The area of the red is going to be 4*(1/2)(3)(3) (four triangles, each with an area 1/2 base * height), or 18. Since the total area is 6*6, the probability the fly will land in red is 18/36 or 50%

The area of the purple will be 4*(1/2)(1.5)(1.5) (four triangles, each with an area 1/2 base*height, with the base and height being 1/2 of 3 feet), or 4.5. The probability the fly will land in purple is 4.5/36 or 12.5%

The area of the blue will be 4*(1/2)(.75)(.75) or 1.125. Probability will be 1.125/36 or 3.125%

The area of the green will be 4*(1/2)(.375)(.375) or .28125. Probability will be .28125/36 or 0.78125%

You should be able to continue from here. Keep in mind that the last calculation for white will be slightly different - it's just side times side, not 4*1/2*b*h because it's a square and not four triangles. But, you could also find the probability by taking 1- the sum of all the other probabilities if you can't figure out the area of the last square.
