Famous Music Artists From Spain

New Spanish flamenco guitar music
Origins
"Flamenco" is the most common name associated with Spanish music. And while it is definitely part of that country's culture, is native only to the southern region of Andalusia. However, this means does'nt that if one is not born in Andalusia, can not be a "real" Flamenco! There has been and still are, many people working in other regions and countries. Most notable in Latin America and Cuba.
Originally, flamenco was the music of Andalusian Gypsies. And, of course, those who grew up around of them were called "Flemish".
As this style of Spanish music was the result of centuries of influence and pollination crusade "by and of the Byzantine and Arab influences, the same is true for the evolution of Spanish guitar.
Cross-pollination
After the Islamic invasion of Spain in 711, the region of what is now known as Cordoba, became a center for Islamic musicians. Who were obviously influenced by local music. The first phase of the guitars "evolution was the addition of a fifth string to the Islamic Oud. The resulting instrument was the Andalusian Nuba. More commonly known as the guitar "Moors."
Centuries later, the elements of this instrument, together with the European Lute and vihuela guitar created America. This became the basis of the Baroque guitar, which, in turn, became the classical guitar. Finally, came the flamenco guitar. A variation on the classic is "cousin".
A Quantum Leap
Although it is always difficult to tell exactly when a particular style or music "started" - it is safe say that the arrival of Carlos Montoya was an important milestone. Montoya, a gypsy, you could'nt read or write music, began performing in pubs when only was 14. At that time, the guitar was viewed as an accompanying instrument. It was Montoya's talent, both as performer and composer who raise the guitar, and his music to the foreground subject.
Durng the 20's and 30's Montoya swept the world, often accompanies dancers known as La Argentina. After World War II, now based in New York, Montoya continued to fill concert halls (including the Astrodome in Houston!) Expanding its repertoire (and again that the Spanish flamenco music) to include jazz, folk and blues.
Passing the Torch
Montoya's accomplishments paved the way for future all flamenco guitarists. The most famous modern is, of course, Paco de Lucia. Like Montoya, Paco also began his career at an early age and also for accompanying dancers and singers. His first major professional achievement was to accompany the legendary flamenco singer Carmen De La Istra for eight years. Paco continues to contribute to the evolution of Spanish music with his performances and compositions that, like Montoya, freely incorporate jazz, pop, rock, folk, blues and classical influences.
The Modern Scene
Today Paco is the heir to the tradition of Montoya, who is the inspiration and reference for the current generation of Spanish flamenco guitarists.
Jesse Cook the Canadian energy. Oscar López. Lawson Rollins. Miguel de la Bastide. José Encinas. And, of course, Santiago Cortes. Like Paco, Santiago to perfection mixes the music of many cultures and traditions, so it is always relative, but never derivative. His two great strengths are the quality of his compositions, and his talent impressive melody. Santiago Incredible technique is always complementing, not overwhelming. This is what makes his style of "flamenco fusion" so unique and audible.
